The Purple Rule

The Purple Rule is: you should always have the color purple in your fly box and in your tying material.  This is not a new trick, but it is an important one that is mostly overlooked by the masses.  A trout’s eyes are more receptive to shades on the blue side of the spectrum (via Trout and Salmon in North America by Dr. Robert Behnke) so maybe this is why when the bite is slow purple flies will often entice a hit.  Buy or tie a few variations of your go-to flies in shades of purple and never leave home without them.  If you’re a tier all you have to do is buy some dubbing and use it to replace the dubbing you are already using.  Or you can simply raid the kid’s craft supplies and steal a purple permanent sharpie.
